The Brazos FFA Dairy Judging team recently competed at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, a highly-esteemed competition that brings together the best livestock exhibitors from across the state of Texas. The team, consisting of Colton Richardson, Gauge McCain, Brayden Krahn, and Logan Main, placed an impressive 5th out of 95 teams, with Richardson placing 9th individually and earning a Calf Scramble Certificate.

This certificate will provide Richardson with the necessary funds to purchase a heifer with the intention of raising and showing it at the 2024 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Additionally, the Junior Team, comprised of Megan Krueger, Daphne Bownds, and Ariel Chaney, placed 48th and is steadily improving with each competition.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is an important event for livestock exhibitors as it offers them the opportunity to showcase their animals and their abilities in various competitions such as dairy judging. It is one of the largest livestock exhibitions in the world, with over 30,000 entries each year.

Dairy judging is a competition where participants evaluate the physical characteristics and abilities of dairy cattle, ranking them based on their conformation and production potential. Judging teams are evaluated on their ability to assess the cattle accurately and explain their reasoning behind their decisions.

Participating in events such as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Dairy Judging competitions not only provides students with the opportunity to showcase their talents and knowledge but also instills in them important values such as hard work, dedication, and responsibility. The Brazos FFA Dairy Judging team’s success at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a testament to their commitment to these values and the hard work they have put into preparing for the competition.
